The Community Of Konza

Konza is a small village of 700 people in the Machakos County of Kenya. It is located 160kms south of Nairobi. The nearest town is Machakos Town, 35kms northeast of Konza. Most of the men have left town in search of work, mostly to Nairobi. They return two to three times per year as it’s too expensive to pay for transport. That leaves the elderly, women and children left behind in Konza to maintain the town. Konza has never had running water. The closest water supply is 7kms away!!! Can you imagine the women with children tied to their backs walking to get water 7kms away and then having to carry it back….but that’s what they have to do, and the small kids do it too……4yr olds carry 5 litres! 12 yr old girls carry up to 20litres!! But the more ‘well-off’ people use a donkey to carry the water, but they still have to walk it there and back every day!
This water well will ensure that women and children can spend more time, working their fields and crops and tending to their animals and going to school instead of walking kilometres to access water. A constant supply of water will also ensure locals can grow their crops to a full harvest and also improve the health of their animals and themselves.
